reverse painting on glass from August Macke to today
On the basis of selected exhibits from August Macke to contemporary art, the exhibition was dedicated to a special genre of painting that opened up a new creative field of experimentation for the artists of Classical Modernism. Starting from the achievements of the "Rhenish Expressionists" and the "Blaue Reiter", the exhibition showed the topicality and diversity that reverse glass painting still has in contemporary art today. The reverse glass paintings by Heinrich Campendonk from the museum's holdings were supplemented by selected loans from private and public collections. Rare works by August Macke and Gabriele Münter, Heinrich Campendonk and Paul Klee, Carlo Mense and Paul Adolf Seehaus were answered by reverse glass paintings after 1945 by Werner Schriefers (1926-2003) and contemporary positions: Michael Jäger, Camill Leberer, and Gaby Terhuven showed space-related works created especially for the exhibition, which entered into dialogue with the important collection and the special architecture of theClemens Sels Museum Neuss. The exhibition traced a formerly folkloric medium whose forward-looking significance for the art of the 20th and 21st centuries has so far received little attention.
