The fascinating and mystical pictorial worlds of the Symbolists George Minne (1866-1941) and Léon Spilliaert (1881-1946) are the focus of the exhibition. For the first time, it juxtaposes two bold pioneers of modernism whose work marks the transition from Symbolism to Expressionism through formal reduction and color concentration.
We are focusing on two artists who are highly revered in their native Belgium, but who are still known to only a few in Germany. Based on our collection of Symbolism, which is unique in this country and internationally recognized, we take a first and surprising look at this groundbreaking epoch in Belgium. On the basis of around 70 paintings and sculptures, some of which are rarely or never before shown, from public and private collections in Germany and abroad, their influence on the art of the 20th century will be explored.
The exhibition is sponsored by

Karl Ernst Osthaus (1874-1921) founded the Museum Folkwang in his hometown of Hagen in 1902. The art-savvy and wealthy art collector and patron built up an extensive collection of contemporary art and actively promoted avant-garde architects and artists, whom he also defended vehemently against criticism. He commissioned George Minne, one of the most important Symbolist sculptors in Belgium around 1900, to create a multi-figure fountain. Minne became, along with Auguste Rodin, a pioneer and key figure in the development of Symbolist sculpture. The angular and elongated formal language of his figures are an expression of a new image of man. Their expressive gestures made Minne a harbinger of modernism. The fountain, a major work of Minne, was sold together with Osthaus' art collection by his heirs and can therefore be admired today in the Museum Folkwang in Essen.
The group will receive an exclusive guided tour of the collection, focusing on Karl Ernst Osthaus and European Symbolism (90 minutes).
Afterwards, seats are reserved at the "Edda" restaurant in the Museum Folkwang for an à la carte lunch together. Afterwards, there may be time for your own explorations of the collection.
